The FDA Approved a Third Drug Named Cialis
To Treat Erectile Dysfunction

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Cialis
(tadalafil) which is a oral medication to treat Erectile Dysfunction
in men. This is the third oral product approved for Erectile
Dysfunction. Cialis is different than the other currently approved
Erectile Dysfunction medications mainly because it stays and
works in the body longer. Cialis acts by relaxing muscles in the
penis and blood vessels which allows increased blood flow into
the penis producing an erection. Cialis was evaluated in placebo
controlled randomized trials involving more than 4,000 Erectile
Dysfunction affected men. Cialis effectiveness was assessed
using a sexual function questionnaire on the effects. Additionally,
patients were asked to report if they were able to achieve an
erection sufficient enough for intercourse and also if their
erection was maintained to allow full completion of intercourse. In
all of these Erectile Dysfunction trials, Cialis improved the men's
ability to achieve and maintain an erection.

The recommended starting dose of Cialis for most patients is
10mg taken 30-60 minutes prior to anticipated sexual activity. A
higher dose of 20mg is available for Erectile Dysfunction
patients whose response to the 10mg dose is not adequate.
Cialis should not be used more than once per day. Cialis should
also not be used with nitrates, such as nitroglycerin tablets and
patches or with an alpha blocker. Alpha blockers are medicines
used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and high blood
pressure. Combining Cialis and alpha blockers may significantly
lower blood pressure and lead to fainting or even death in some
men. Because some prescription drugs affect the metabolism of
Cialis, patients should inform their physician that they are taking
Cialis to treat Erectile Dysfunction. For example, patients taking
ketoconazole or ritonoavir should not take more than a 10mg
dose of Cialis once every 72 hours. In most men, after taking a
single dose of Cialis, some of the drug will remain in the body for
more than 2 days. In those with decreased kidney function, taking
certain medications ( ketoconazole or ritonavir ) or have an
impairment of the liver - Cialis can remain in the body longer. For
those with moderately or severely decreased kidney function, the
starting dose of Cialis is 5mg taken once daily. In this Erectile
Dysfunction group, the dose may be increased to 10mg taken
once every 48 hours. Patients with mild or moderate liver
impairment, the maximum dose of Cialis is 10mg.

Cialis should not be taken by men with a cardiovascular issue or
a heart condition. Erectile Dysfunction patients should inform
their doctor about any heart problems that they have experienced
before taking Cialis. Cialis is not recommended in patients who
have suffered a heart attack or stroke within the last six months
or Erectile Dysfunction patients who have very low blood
pressure or very high blood pressure or retinitis pigmentosa,
which is a eye disorder. The most common side effects of Cialis
in clinical trials included back pain, muscle aches, flushing,
headache, indigestion and stuffy or runny nose. Patients who get
back pain and muscle aches usually get it 12 to 24 hours after
taking Cialis and these usually go away by themselves within 48
hours. A small number of patients taking Cialis also reported
abnormal vision. Before taking Cialis, patients are advised to
undergo a thorough medical history and physical examination to
attempt to diagnose the underlying cause of the Erectile
Dysfunction and to identify appropriate treatment.

Have Realistic Expectations

Medications such as Cialis won't make you feel like you're 20
again, but it can help you achieve satisfying sexual relations
more often. Be willing to work with your physician to find which
prescription drug and dosage best works for you. For some men,
Cialis is not a safe or effective choice. Other treatment options
for Erectile Dysfunction may work. These include medications
and treatments that are injected into the penis or put into the
urethra before sex, penis pumps, vacuum constriction devices
and penile implants.
