| Viagra ( sildenafil citrate ) was the first approved non-surgical treatment for ED and is medication made by Pfizer. In order to treat ED, Viagra does not have to be injected or inserted directly into the penis to achieve and maintain an erection. ED affects the lives of many men young and old. Although ED is more common in men older than 65, it can occur at any age. The term ED mainly refers to the inability to obtain an adequate erection for satisfactory sexual activity and Viagra is one of the three ED drugs proved to significantly help. ED drugs like Viagra was once a taboo subject, but more men are now seeking help. Doctors are gaining a better understanding of what causes ED and are finding new and better treatments. Viagra was originally developed by Pfizer as a drug to help men who were suffering from chest pain, but Viagra did not show promise as a heart medication and studies were stopped in 1992. However, Viagra did seem to have some interesting "side effects" based on published information and Pfizer researchers began to look at Viagra as a treatment for ED. The clinical trials found Viagra to be so effective at treating ED, the FDA approved it only six months after submission. Some Viagra and ED Facts Viagra can be taken as often as once a day, every day. Begin by taking Viagra 30 minutes to 1 hour before having sex. You may find that Viagra works faster for you as little as in 15 minutes. For most men with ED, Viagra will work the first or second time. But some men need to ease back into sex, especially if their ED problem is caused by a physiological issue as well. There are 3 doses of Viagra: 25mg, 50mg, and 100mgs. Doctors will usually start their patients on the 50mg tablet, but many men will find that 100mg Viagra tablet works better and faster. If you have prostate problems or high blood pressure and take medicines called alpha-blockers, your doctor may start you on a lower dose. Viagra is just as effective with or without food and alcohol, but to get the quickest results, avoid high-fat meals 2 hours before taking Viagra. A fatty meal like a cheeseburger and fries can slow your body’s ability to absorb the drug and Viagra may not work as quickly. Remember, Viagra will only work when you are sexually aroused or stimulated, but you will notice a big difference. To get the fastest and best results, take Viagra on an empty stomach or after eating a low fat meal. Viagra Side Effects Like with all medicines, some people taking Viagra may experience a side effect. These are usually mild and don’t last longer than a few hours. The most common side effects are upset stomach, headache and facial flushing. The less common side effects are bluish vision, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light may briefly occur. The frequency of side effects has been proven to shown that they decrease over time. If you experience chest pain, nausea, or any other discomforts during sex, seek immediate medical help. If you take any medicines that have nitrates like nitroglycerin for chest pain, you should NOT take Viagra. In rare instances, men taking PDE5 inhibitors (oral ED medicines, including Viagra) reported a sudden decrease or loss of vision. Although erections lasting for more than 4 hours may occur rarely with all ED treatments, it is important to seek immediate medical help if this happens to you. If you experience sudden decrease or loss of vision, stop taking Viagra immediately and call a doctor right away. If you are older than age 65 and/or have serious liver or kidney problems, your medical physician may start you at the lowest dose of 25mg of Viagra. If you are taking protease inhibitors, such as for the treatment of HIV, your physician may recommend a 25mg dose and may limit you to a maximum single dose of 25mg in a 48 hour time period. Remember to protect yourself and your partner from sexually transmitted diseases and discuss your general health status with your medical physician to ensure that you are healthy enough to engage in sexual activity.
